Mendocino County
The move to create a comprehensive, city and county-wide recycling program has gained several measures of ground during the last couple of months. Despite bureaucratic foot-dragging, the county supervisors approved a resolution to begin curbside pickup and to put separation bins at the county dumps by 1991. Also approved was a $68.00 assessment fee increase which will help fund both current landfill costs and recycling efforts. The county would prefer that with these funds provided, that someone else do the actual business, be it private enterprise, non-profit or other. Meanwhile, a county task force will soon be set up comprised of Supervisors, public works department personnel and private citizens that will see the project to fruition.
City of Ukiah
After several months of delay, Solid Waste Systems, Ukiah's garbage hauler, presented their proposal for curbside pickup in Ukiah to the city council. However, SWS asked for more time in which to gather information, so the city council tabled the item until the next meeting on July 19. The Recycling Action Group [RAG] is recommending to the city of Ukiah that a task force similar to the county's be appointed so that a curbside program does happen in Ukiah.
The members of RAG are working toward a unified effort between citys, individuals and the county that together will create and sustain recycling for our citizens that it is not only convenient and cost-effective, but will substantially reduce the amount of waste going into our landfills.
