Ancient Forest Task Force

by Roger Foote

The Ancient Forest Task Force is just completing the map exchange with the Willows offices. Chirre Kraatz and Barbara Chaney recently sent us copies of most of the maps and I have returned the last remaining maps which you volunteers so generously completed. The total number of hours donated to the mapping project to date is 301.

Although Tim Bertram has transferred to Colville National Forest (P.O. Box 582, Ione, WA 99139), we feel that our collaborative work will continue with Willows. Chirre and Barbara have been very helpful and reliable in the past months and we are anxious to meet Tim's replacement.

Our Next Meeting of AFTF: September 21, 1989, at 7 p.m. in MEC. Pass on this date and come prepared to discuss what you think ought to be the next step in our mapping program. It is my opinion that we should transfer the major areas of mature and Old Growth stands to a recreation map of MNF so that we can best discuss the priorities. Guidelines will probably be ecological viability and eminent THP's which would threaten unique ecosystems. We should consider the extensive Audubon guidelines for mapping. It is very important to find persons willing to gather data about Ancient Forests which falls outside the Mendocino National Forest in the Mendo/Lake region. It has been emphasized that BLM and private lands are being ignored too often.
