John Muir Day
John Muir Day, April 21st has officially been enacted in statue by the Legislature as a State Holiday. For several years the Legislature has been declaring this a holiday by resolution. The difference between a resolution and a statue sounds like a permanently instituted holiday, doesn't it? However, Government offices and schools will not be closed. Has the concept of holidays been changed? By whom? We think that there's nothing like a day off to make you aware of the reason thereof.
We do wish to commend activist Harold Wood of the Kern Kaweach Chapter of Cal. Wilderness for spearheading the Muir Day idea. Mr. Wood is now busy coordinating efforts to help schools and community groups develop appropriate ways to celebrate this holiday.
John Muir founded the Sierra Club in 1892. He championed the creation of the first National Forests. It's important that his teachings and principals be taught and preserved in these troubled environmental times. He deserves a real holiday!
