Fort Bragg Environmental Center

by Lisa Vargas

Secretary, FBEC

The Fort Bragg Environmental Center, located at 110 E. Laurel St. in Ft. Bragg is undergoing some new changes since its split from the MEC as its "mother/sister" Environmental Center. Many thanks to all of you at the MEC for your past support and continued interest in the FBEC.

One of the changes that has recently occurred is the hiring of Becky Ray, recently moved here from the Russian River area and teaching school in the Sonoma County area. In 1988-89, she taught school in Leggett, and in the summer of this year, lived and taught summer school in Laytonville. She has been a Mendocino-Sonoma region resident since 1977, and has been involved in various environmental issues such as participation in the old Mendocino Environmental Center in Mendocino during the late '70s, serving on the board of the Ocean Protection Coalition, serving on the board of the Mendocino Area parks association, supporting the Surfrider's Foundation picket at Goat Rock and through membership, was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve the Commission so the Status of Women by presenting environmental information. We welcome her aboard, and hope that she enjoys her tenure as Coordinator of Volunteers at FBEC.

The Fort Bragg Environmental Center is sponsoring the Middle East Slide Show to be held at the Fort Bragg branch library on Sept. 20th at 7 p.m., 499 E Laurel St., Fort Bragg. Becky will be available to discuss the Center's fundraising efforts with regional business and the volunteer drive to keep the storefront open at 110 E. Laurel St. On display at the slide show will be blankets and cloth diapers for the women end children relief efforts in Iraq.

Adopt-A-Beach is the current main theme at the Center this week, as we support the area clean-up efforts at local beaches to promote a healthier, cleaner environment for the enjoyment of our beaches. We are also supporting efforts to maintain free beaches for the public, in hopes that beach fees can be revoked.

Newly appointed board members of the FBEC are: Chairperson Lisa Lebow, Co-chairperson Stuart Tregoning, Coordinator of Volunteers Becky Ray, Treasurer/Business Manager Sean Keppeler, Secretary Lisa Vargas, and member Oliver Trueheart.

A recent fundraising event, August 17th, featured Pura Vida, a Latin salsa band in a dance/concert at St. Anthony's Hall in Mendocino. It was a great success, thanks to the many businesses and individuals, too numerous to mention, who either donated funds, concessions, or valuable time and effort to make it a wonderful event.

Drop by the Center any time, or call: 961-0554 for details on any of the up-coming events. We'd love to see you, and need your support.
