In your efforts, you've probably noticed how frustrating recycling is, since there is so much that recycling centers currently won't take - and so much that is simply not recyclable.
So it is clear that simply recycling is not enough. It is imperative that we PRECYCLE and REDUCE the amount of garbage that we create in the first place. These simple steps can help in that process:
¥ Choose products with the least amount of packaging possible. Avoid juice boxes, plastic outer wrap, etc. - anything you throw away before even getting to the product you wanted to use.
¥ Choose products packaged only in packaging that can be recycled in your community.
¥ Choose nonhazardous cleaning and household products. Clean ovens and toilets with baking soda. Use salt and boiling water or a plunger or "snake" for clogged drains. Clean windows with a vinegar and water solution.
¥ Use shopping bags, so when they say "paper or plastic", you can reply, "I have my own, thank you!"
¥ Avoid "one-use, disposables". Choose products that can be reused.
¥ Store leftovers and pack sandwiches in reusable containers,m not foil or plastic wrap.
¥ Use sponges and washable rags instead of paper towels.
¥ Use cloth instead of paper napkins.
¥ Use china or pottery dishes, instead of plastic and paper.
¥ Dry clothes on a clothes line, instead of in the dryer.
¥ Reduce what you consume - simply buy less!
If there are people in the Ukiah area interested in pursuing more extensive precycling, recycling and reuse ideas, please call the MEC (468-1660)! There are tons of ideas that can be tried - all we need are enthusiastic people to implement them!
