People First - A Kentucky Forum For Sustainability

by Larry Wilson, Highlander Center

The State of Kentucky is planning to host the nation's follow-up to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) that took place in Rio last June. They are titling the conference "From Rio to the Capitols - State Strategies for Sustainable Development." We just learned that the event will be funded by the State of Kentucky, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority and industry. The dates for the conference are May 25-28, 1993.

Several community environmental groups with the support of larger environmental groups are planning an alternative conference titled "People First - A Kentucky Forum for Sustainability." This event will be held May 14-16, 1993. We are asking friends like you to please ask people, via your newsletter, to hold these dates and come and join us in making the environmental community voices heard. We will get more detailed information to you as it is developed. For further information, those interested should contact the people below.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in this very important matter. We feel that this is a first in a series of conferences that will be used to validate whatever sin that industry and government wishes to impose on us in the name of UNCED. We must support one another in the face of this new challenge.
