Forest Summit

by Betty Ball and Judith Vidaver

Close to 20 activists from Mendocino County joined other activists from California, Washington and Oregon at the Forest Activists Conference sponsored by Headwaters in Ashland, Oregon February 4-7th. The conference featured panel discussions on the state of watersheds and fisheries all over the Pacific Northwest, updates on federal legislation, updates on litigation, and many discussions about the upcoming Forest Summit promised by President Clinton during his campaign.

While there was not time for the 400 activists attending the conference to reach consensus on a position regarding the desired process and content for the Summit, many ideas and suggestions and recommendations were made during the course of the three days. It is agreed by many that the process of arriving at consensus position will be continued by fax, phone and mail. Anyone wishing to participate in the Summit process may become involved by calling Betty or Gary at the MEC 468-1660, or David and Ellen Drell at the WEC 459-4110.

As a beginning point for discussion purposes, we include below ideas and suggestions generated by Judith Vidaver and others from the Redwood Chapter of the Sierra Club. Feel free to add your ideas and recommendations to these.
