The Mendocino Environmental Center is a multi-faceted organization working to promote positive change in environmental and social justice issues in Mendocino County, Northern California and beyond. Let's try to get to the heart of this statement. Multi-faceted refers to a precious gemstone that has many sides or faces. Our gem, the MEC, is valuable to us because of the way it has empowered our community. After over ten years of assisting a broad spectrum of community activist groups to use nonviolent direct action and legal processes to voice concerns, and to win lawsuits revolving around environmental and social justice issues, the MEC has become a vehicle for positive change for concerned residents. The MEC is multifaceted because it strives to promote understanding by looking at the many faces of an issue. The MEC is also multifaceted because of the diversity of each public interest group that has been able to be born through the midwifery of the MEC.
Countless Wonders
Mendocino County has countless wonders to behold, to appreciate, to be thankful for and to protect. This is our home and we care about it. That is why we are members of the MEC. Being an environmentalist is as basic as that. Northern California is the habitat of the fisher, the timber worker, the rancher, the back to the lander, new-age, self-sufficient alternative folks, the coho salmon, the spotted owl, the ancient redwoods all striving for the balance in which to co-exist. Northern California is changing and the MEC is here to help facilitate that change.
Great Beyond
Finally, the great beyond: the MEC empathizes and networks with other communities in the world where there are people just like us coming together in defense of their immediate environments. The MEC is a sparkling green glowing gem of hope.
