Toxic Free Future

by Bruce Hering

Toxic Free Future grew out of the late 1996 early 1997 actions to halt CALTRANS' use of roadside herbicides in Mendocino County. This effort was comprised of concerned citizens from all parts of the county and could not have succeeded without the MEC. The MEC was the heart of those efforts, serving as central meeting place and extremely important communication center when timely messages between activists was essential.

TFF plans to continue this close relationship into 1998 and beyond to influence CALTRANS and other governmental units, including the county, to lessen their use of toxics in public places.

In addition to serving as a message center and Toxic Free Future

central meeting place, the MEC's extensive environmental library is very helpful. TFF can aid the MEC by bringing in new activists - the lifeblood of the MEC - as well as financial contributions.

At the latest meeting, TFF agreed to focus on two issues: 1) to insure the CALTRANS pesticide moratorium is continued for the upcoming year in Mendocino County, and 2) to halt the use of extremely toxic substances used in the poisoning of coyotes (see pertinent article in this issue).

Anyone interested in participating in TFF should plan on attending our next meeting at the MEC at 11 A.M., on Saturday, April 11, 1998, or contact me, Bruce Hering at (707) 895-3589 or bruceb@pacific.net
