The Ukiah Theater, Cotler Brothers Productions, and Cheesecake Momma's joined hearts on September 17 to sponsor a fundraiser for the Mendocino Environmental Center. The movie "Heartwood" was shown to an audience of 80 appreciative MEC supporters, many of whom walked up the street afterward to enjoy a reception at Cheesecake Momma's. Admission to both events was available on a sliding scale and attendees were very generous.
Written, produced, and directed by Steve and Lanny Cotler, "Heartwood" is truly a homegrown movie. Filmed in Mendocino County, it is a coming-of-age love story set against the backdrop of the redwood forests. Jason Robards, Eddie Mills, and Holly Near star, along with a host of local extras, including the MEC's own Dale Glaser.
Steve and Lanny are among those local business people who like to bring their values to life through their work. Not only did they make a film that brings the beauty of the redwoods to movie houses around the country, they volunteered to make the film available in support of the MEC. Ukiah Theater joined forces, even helped with publicity. And sure enough, Robin Collier of Cheesecake Momma's donated her luscious goodies and a cozy place to hold a reception for the moviegoers.
Reception music
MEC board members Ede Morris and Lang Russel brought their music to the reception, and Steve Cotler shared amazing stories about the trials of filming a movie in our beloved, beautiful county.
The evening was a grand success, both as a fund raiser and as a fine time among some fine folks. And this success was due to the continuing support of the committed and caring people in our communityÑand the generosity of some conscientious local businesses. We're grateful, and invite readers to show their appreciation by supporting those business in turn.
It's nice to know there are caring people who support other people who care.
