Videos, Vittles and Verbosity

by Jenny Burnstad

There was a good turn out for the February 19 viewing of the video, "Who's Counting? Sex, Lies and the Global Economy" by Marilyn Waring. We had folks attending from as far north as Laytonville and as far east as Lower Lake. The vittles were especially tasty, wholesome and homemade. It seems like there was the potential for a year's worth of good conversation packed into one evening. That's why we're gonna do it again, so we can get educated, eat and talk some more.

In April we will meet on Sunday the 25th. Thanks again to our kind hosts Marvin and Millie Lehrman who will be opening the doors of the Forks Theater for us at 5:00. Let's try to get ourselves served dinner and ready to watch the film by 6:00 so that there's plenty of time for dialogue and traveling afterwards. Oh yes, the topic of the evening will be one of our favorites, Sustainable CommunitiesÑsomething we all want to grow up to be a part of. You've read the book, now see the movie, Gaviotas... where ingenious collegiates joined hands with their indigenous compatriots to transform a desert in Columbia into a bouquet of alternatives that worked. The legendary Findhorn Community of Scotland, famous for the quality of its vegetables, is also featured in this video along with other examples of self-sustaining communities.

Next January you might be glad you decided to come see these films. We need to continually nudge each other and ourselves to do the work to become as self sustaining as possible. This year we're finding new reasons to recall old fables like Chicken Little and the Little Red Hen. Seems like now we've got about enough time left to start making like the Grasshopper rather than the Ant. See you at the Forks Theater!
