Supporting the MEC

The work goes on, but it expands at the same time. The result: increased stress for both staff and volunteers and the usual shortage of funds and other resources necessary to carry forward the struggle. One issue: Georgia Pacific and Mendocino Redwood Company (The Gap) are stepping up the rate of liquidation logging in the coastal areas of the county. To counter that requires action on every level, from communication with the governor to direct action in the forest. Your MEC is a primary factor in support of those actions. That means mailings; that means publicity; that means networking and coordination. And that's only one of the issues facing this community.

We need people. We have someÑsolid, hard-working volunteers and staffÑbut we need more to do what's necessary. We need each reader to put aside some time to participate, at whatever level with whatever skills.

We need equipment. Our computers are ancient and modernizing takes money (see next paragraph). Most folks upgrade from time to time. Readers can help by passing replaced machines on to the MEC. Zip drives and CD drives are welcome also. In fact, we can use just about any computer equipment, the more current the better.

We need money. Apparently a lot of people think the problems are solved, because donations are down. In the best of times we barely scrape by. These haven't been the best of times. Send money or, better yet, bring some with you when you come down to volunteer. You could commit to a monthly donation to help us pay off our copy machine, something that is crucial to the work of your MEC.

This is not your ordinary plea for help. Your MEC is looking at stepped-up attacks on our environment and we must have stepped up participation and support to meet those attacks. Think long and hard about what life without your MEC would be before you set this plea aside. And then act. Make your MEC a bigger part of your life.
