Alliance for Democracy
Alliance for Democracy is a national organization, founded by Ronnie Dugger in Texas. It is part of a growing movement to challenge the rights of corporations who are doing harm to the Earth and all that live here. A hundred years ago corporations did not have the powerful stranglehold they now have. If they caused harm, they lost their privilege of doing business - their charters were revoked. Alliance for Democracy, along with the Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy (POCLAD), Democracy Unlimited, and many other groups are working to educate and activate the public about our history and future options.
Mendocino County has three chapters of the Alliance for Democracy - on the north coast, south coast and inland. The inland group, working with the MEC, has organized a Green Tortoise bus to the World Trade Organization conference in Seattle at the end of November. Tens of thousands of people from around the world are expected to converge on Seattle for this WTO conference, which is the arena for global corporations to essentially override all countries' environmental and labor laws. Watch for reports on this critical conference and the response of the people of the world. (See Challenge the WTO!, p. 1)
