MEC To Lead Cleanup of Upper Russian River
The Mendocino Environmental Center was recently funded by the California Coastal Conservancy to lead a cleanup of the Russian River in Mendocino County. The effort will begin this fall and continue in the spring, when the rain cycle will allow the greatest impact.
The MEC hopes to coordinate, enhance, and expand the efforts of local volunteers, government agencies, and private companies. Special attention will be paid to removing tires, debris, trash, and appliances that affect fish migration and other habitat. The program will be patterned after the very successful effort in Sonoma County, where private organizations signed on as stewards for sections of the river. A team of 6-8 people can do two miles in a day. The Mendocino Solid Waste Management Authority has agreed to arrange for hauling and pay the dump fees. Building and Planning will haul away any abandoned vehicles, and Environmental Health will test and dispose of any hazardous materials.
