WEEK OF RESISTANCE

by Josh Brown

On April 1st through 8th Earth First! activist in Northern California are organizing a Week of Resistance to challenge the ongoing destruction of the coastal redwood ecosystem. Despite our best efforts Governor Gray Davis, the Board of Forestry, and CDF continue to work in collusion to further Corporate Timber's agenda. Both Humblodt and Mendocino are witnessing an amazing amount of destructive Timber Harvest Plans that target old-growth, clearcut in overcut watersheds and will wipe out remnant salmon runs. In Humboldt County, NCEF! will challenge Maxxam/Pacific Lumber in their attempts to log the Hole In Headwaters and drive the Coho Salmon to extinction. In Mendocino, Earth First! will stand up to the Mendocino Redwood Company and the Hawthorne Investment Group in their attempts to log the remains of Mendocino's ravaged redwoods. Other corporate loggers such as Simpson, Sierra Pacific, and Redwood Empire will also be held accountable. Affinity Groups are forming and activist from Santa Cruz to the Oregon border are needed. Please call the MEC at 468-1660 or NCEF! at 825-6598 to get involved.

An inspirational quote for the week of action-

"You may well ask, 'why direct action? Why sit-ins, marches, etc.? Isn't negotiation a better path?' You are exactly right in your path for negotiation. Indeed this is the purpose for direct action. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and establish such creative tension that a community that has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue. It seeks so to dramatize the issue that it can no longer be ignored."

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. , Letter from Birmingham Jail.
