Critical Time for Lori Berenson
Lori Berenson, a U.S. citizen, has been held in Peruvian prisons for almost five years. Her health is permanently damaged from the inhumane conditions she has endured. She was convicted of being a terrorist and leader of MRTA, a rebel guerrilla group in that country. The secret military tribunal, who were hooded and held her at gun point during the mock trial, sentenced her to life imprisonment for treason.
The Peruvian military has just admitted to having no evidence against Lori, and has overturned their sentence. The Peruvian government has admitted that Lori was falsely convicted. It is clear they knew for many months that the conviction was unjust, yet they are now proceeding with a civil trial where Lori will not have legal representation.
Calls for her release are coming from all over the world, including from over half of the U.S. Congress. Even the U.S. State Department has stated that a fair trial for charges of terrorism is not possible in Peruvian civil courts.
This is a critical time for Lori. Sufficient pressure will win her release. Please help bring Lori home!
