Active-Fest A Success In Boonville

by Raphael Borras

Active-fest 2000, which occurred Bastille Day Weekend (July 14-16) at The Boonville Fairgrounds in Mendocino County, was organized as a regional Northern California gathering of Activists concerned with the environment, human rights, community building and social justice. We reached out to many individuals and groups, hoping to build a network, exchange information and ideas, and ultimately forge a coaliton to address our concerns. The Boonville Fairgrounds was the ideal location to gather and enjoy each others energy, in as much as we were able to provide camping and indoor/outdoor workshop space, childcare, two stages for music and keynote speakers, and a wonderful commercial kitchen, in which was prepared delicious vegan food. There was no charge for entrance, camping or food. The weather could not have been better and the magnificent light of a full moon provided a magical aura throughout the evenings.

Many folks from Mendocino County contributed energy to the success of this event. I would like to thank Lynda McClure along with many others at the Mendocino Environmental Center that helped to incubate and realize this idea. Russ Emal (Hungry Hollow Production - web design) created and maintained the Active-Fest website (www.saber.net/~rafa). Tamara Baxman scheduled speakers and musicians. Moon and many helpers worked tirelessly and lovingly to provide savory wholesome food. Jacob Bass and his friends constructed the stages. Jaki supervised the childcare. Mike Dalerio's skills as an E.M.T. and nurse assured first-aid. The incredible design of The Phoenix Rising which we adopted as the logo and poster for Active-fest was beautifully crafted by Ellen Witherite, Northcoast artist. Musicians and Poets generously donated their time: a special thanks to "Frida' Circus", "East Wind", "Bleed'n Blues Band", "Next Inversion", "THe Rachel Benson Band", Paris, Hawk, Antonia Lamb, Tamara Baxman, Rosalina Jewitt, "La Tigresa", Sophia(Songhealer), "the Trashette's", "Torch Lounge", Mitchell Holman, Danny and Sandy Zaffarano, Tara Sufiana, Pat Cuvielo, Rene Burnet, Sue Sisk, and the poet Zenith.
