One Thousand Members By 2002
by Jenny Burnstad
As the MEC begins a new fiscal year we are joining forces to gather funds to enable us to continue our mission. We have board members in the process of writing watershed restoration grants. We have staff members strategizing about where next to canvass and do public outreach in our county. We have a handful of major donors who have been there for the MEC whenever called upon or surprised us with a generous donation. Over the course of the last year some individuals and organizations have given us computer equipment and office furniture. We have pledging members, many of them retired or low income, who tithe every month. And at the heart of the MEC is a core membership hovering at around 365 individuals, couples and families, some of whom have been with us our entire 14 years. Every one of these members should be thanked, and encouraged to work together now more than ever before. We must, at the very least, double our membership if we expect the MEC to thrive. We have set a goal of 1,000 members by 2002.
This spring I would like to re-seed the idea that if each of us convinced one other person or family to join the MEC our efforts could yield a larger membership in a short period of time. In appreciation the MEC will give an organic vegetable start to both you and the new member you cultivate. Mendocino Organics of Redwood Valley has agreed to plant flats of vegetable starts for the MEC especially for this purpose. With the strength of a larger membership we will become more rooted in our community, more able to activate the good changes we hope for, and more capable of remaining solvent as an organization.
