MEC Fiscal Report

by Jenny Burnstad

The following figures reflect the Income and Expenses that occurred between April 1, 2000 and March 31, 2001, the MEC's fiscal year. Even though there were some tight months we managed to end the year in the black. Members are welcome to come in and view the detailed financial Profit and Loss Statement and Balance Sheet figures.

For the purposes of this report I have broken down the income and expenses into percentages. The largest percentage of income came to the MEC Environmental Education Fund (MEC EEF). The Cloud Forest Institute is the fiscal sponsor of this fund. The percentage shown reflects a grant from the Cereus Fund of the Trees Foundation as well as all other tax- deductible contributions made to the MEC. If you add the percentages of Membership Dues, Contributions Income (nonÐtax-deductible contributions from the membership that were not restricted for educational purposes) and Campaign Income (the public outreach campaign for new members) the result is 34.45%. This means that our membership is bringing in just over one-third of the funds of our budget. That is pretty good considering that many non-profits are solely dependent on grants to survive. If we increase our membership by two- thirds we will have a very strong financial foundation to support the MEC throughout the year. Our goal is 1,000 members by 2002.
