Mendocino Environmental Center News

With sadness, we note the passing of friend and member, Eleanor Lewallen, and send condolences to husband John and family. Mother, wife, activist, artist, author, teacher, ocean protector, Eleanor, you will be missed, thank you.

Board Elections: Annual Board Elections will be held in December. Members have been sent a request for nominations, which close November 16, and will receive candidate statements and ballots by the first week in December. Ballots will be counted at the December Board meeting. New directors will take their seats in January and serve a two-year term.

Office Manager Wanted: The MEC is hiring an office manager, 18 hours per week. Good telephone, office and people skills are important. Issue knowledge and activist experience are a plus. Position to start January 1, 2002. Send resume to MEC, 106 W. Standley St., Ukiah, 95482.

Activities: Since the war started, and with the logging of "Hole in Headwaters," we have experienced a surge in activity. We co-sponsored three community forums with the Ukiah Methodist Church as a first response to September 11. Community members had a safe place to express dissenting views and the seeds of peace-organizing were sown. We co-sponsored a rally for peace at Alex Thomas Plaza. Our workers have begun a door-to-door canvass focusing on alternatives to war. We are providing support, office space, mailing address, photocopier, fax, e-mail and message phone services for campaigns and activists. Come in, get informed and get to work. If not now, when?

Goodbyes:Jenny Burnstad has resigned as our accountant to devote her time to Cloud Forest Institute. Thanks, Jen, for all you've done and for your continued support. Due to overwhelming demands for her talents and activism, Sherry Glaser has resigned her Board seat. She will continue to volunteer in other ways, and we will co-sponsor events with her.

Thank you: Jeff Stanford generously donated our Harvest Moon Raffle prize of a night's stay at Stanford Inn By The Sea, including use of all facilities, breakfast at the Raven Restaurant, and a day's rental from Catch a Canoe and Bicycles Too! The raffle earned $698. Congratulations to members Barbara and Robert Goodell who won the prize.

Pledges and Memberships: More than ever we need your help in continuing our work; although activities have increased, donations since September 11 have decreased. It has been a challenge to pay the receptionist, office costs and other necessities. We are asking those who support the work we do to become members, and to consider giving a monthly pledge or a year-end donation. Reliable monthly pledges will lay important groundwork for a future of financial security and environmental activism.
