Local Food Directory

Strengthening Farmer-Buyer Connections

by Doug Mosel

Imagine a Mendocino County directory of local food, who grows it and where to buy it or find it served in local eateries or schools. This is the vision of Sustainable Mendocino County (SUM), an informal group of sustainability activists, who are working on just such a directory. (We'll have more about SUM in a future issue.)

Plans are to list food and food products (including meat and dairy) grown or harvested in Mendocino County. The directory will feature local family or family-owned growers/producers. For each food/product, the directory will list the grower/producer, location, contact information, and where the food is served or sold in Mendocino County. The directory will be organized into sections: organic, wildcrafted, transitional, pesticide-free, and conventional food (the latter limited to food sold primarily in Mendocino County). Each part of the directory will offer an introduction and where that section fits into the larger context of local and sustainable food. A map will help readers find growers, markets, and eating places.

A survey will be used to invite growers, eating places, or markets to participate. Meanwhile, anyone interested may contact the SUM food directory group by calling 485-6672.
