Homeland Insecurity

Pacific Lumber Company (PL) has proposed that local officials look to the new federal department of Homeland Security for help in stopping environmental activists. In April, PL President Robert Manne complained to the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors that the company foresees another summer of controversy and confrontation between it and "radical" environmental activists who oppose PL's deforestation logging practices.

Addressing the supervisors, Manne wheedled, "I know as fiscally prudent watchdogs of the public's treasury, none of you can be overjoyed by the probability that on a limited tax base, costs for policing and law enforcement may soar this summer. Since some of our enemies boldly proclaim themselves to be 'eco-terrorists' I would urge you to contact your member of Congress and ask if Tom Ridge's new Homeland Security budget cannot be a source of revenue support which will minimize the impacts on this county's already strapped budget."
