Mendocino Environmental Center News

Board of Directors

We ask a lot from our Board members: fundraising, help with membership expansion, committee work and spokesperson roles. Due to our limited budget we need a hands-on Board. Life and family commitments have made it necessary for two of our newer members to resign. We'd like to say thanks and goodbye to Lasara Firefox and Jerome Bouvier. We have found three hardworking people to take their places. Welcome to Chet Collins, Paul Davis and Brandon Virgin. These men are committed to increasing our membership, making the MEC financially solvent and providing more opportunities for youth.

Board Nominations

Board elections are held in December. We are soliciting nominations from our membership. For the first time we have many Board members who can take care of the business end of the MEC. We are looking to the activist community for our new Board members. We want seasoned activists who are able to work on the environmental and social justice issues facing us. We promise not to burden you with administrative work.

Essential Volunteers

Mary McClanahan-Calvert, our peace and social justice coordinator, Iris McGinnis, newsletter distributor, and Chris Bennett, long-time friend, supporter and recorder, have encountered major life changes that necessitate their temporary resignations. With gratitude and sorrow we say goodbye for now. We are looking for people to step up and take their places.

Trees Grant

The Community Forest Education Project has scheduled two hikes. Saturday, October 5th, we will hike in Montgomery Woods to see the ecology of an old-growth redwood grove. Saturday, October 12th, we will hike in Jackson State Forest to witness poor forestry practices and discuss restoration and reforestation. Both hikes will begin at 11 am, guided by Bill Heil. Call the MEC at 468-1660 to reserve a space and take part in carpooling.

Ed Nieves will conduct a Timber Harvest Plan Monitoring workshop on Saturday, November 9th, 11 am at the MEC. You will learn how to read THPs and write legal comments on them.

Later in November, we will be showing the video, "Thinking Like a Watershed," and conducting a workshop with the accent on work. We will be asking attendees to help us map and color code all the timber harvest plans in the county, which will give us an essential tool for community education. Stay tuned.

Office Reception

Welcome to Liz Hamburg, who has taken on the demanding job of MEC office reception. She works Tuesdays through Fridays. On Mondays the office is staffed by Vicki Oldham.

Summer Raffle

Thank you to Lost Coast Kayaking for again donating a two-hour guided tour for two on the beautiful Mendocino coast. The MEC earned $600 in ticket sales. Congratulations to MEC supporting member Char Jacobs who won the prize.

Webcasting

The MEC Board plans to have a webcasting station at the MEC. We intend to begin webcasting in early November. This webcast would be picked up by local micro-power stations and rebroadcast throughout the county. A committee has been formed to implement the webcasts. Earl Brown and Jim Mathews attended the last MEC Board meeting and discussed the possibilities of different types of programming that could be done live from the MEC. If you are interested in radio call the MEC and participate in this new project.

Webpage

Our webpage, mecgrassroots.org, was down for a little while recently. We have changed servers and have a new crew of workers who are redesigning our webpage. One of the cool ideas they have is to put up a MEC chat room and an environmental message board for members and the public. Take a look at the new construction and watch for the moving banners.

Other Changes

A new coat of paint was slapped up in the office (don't worry, no VOCs). You'll also notice some of the furniture departed for the garage sale. With the help of Sid Cooperrider and friends we have a DSL connection that has been split to go to all the computers in the MEC. We have four terminals, so come on down and enjoy high speed Internet (for your environmental research, yeehaw).

Business Sponsors

The Business Sponsorship Program involves local businesses whose products and services are consistent with Mendocino Environmental Center values. Their support helps to sustain the MEC as we continue to work toward environmental and social justice. In turn, we ask our members and readers to support these sponsors. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact the MEC.
