"Ever since the Mendocino Grapevine crashed and burned 15 years ago, there's been a real need for a newspaper that side-steps the mainstream and creates an alternative to the corporate canned news we've been force-fed," said Laura Hamburg, one of the paper's publishers. "I grew up in this town and I have a real affection for Ukiah. All of us wanted to be a part of a paper that celebrates a rare and dying breedÑa small town that hasn't been completely swallowed by chain stores and subdivisions."
In addition to Hamburg, a former San Francisco Chronicle reporter and managing editor of a Washington DC news service covering Washington for more than 300 newspapers, the other three publishers are: Sid Cooperrider, one of the local owners of the Ukiah Brewing Company, website designer and a former publisher of three newspapers in the Fort Collins, Colorado area; Brandon Virgin, a local artist and music promoter; and Paul Davis, a long-time Ukiah resident.
According to the paper's mission statement, The Bullhorn is a "muckraking newspaper-type product that covers real issues, nurtures and supports community arts and local businesses, is a good read and kicks you in the teeth."
The paper will be free, sustained by local business advertising and distributed in newspaper racks in 80 locations sprinkled throughout the greater Ukiah and inland area.
